I expect the target number of P4 games going forward for each P4 team will be 10. I also expect the Bug Ten and SEC to both have 9 conference games and to favor games from the other P2 conference for the 10th game. Games between teams in the second tier (ACC and SEC) and the first tier (SEC and Big Ten) will be few and far between. The ongoing exceptions will be certain rivalry games: S Car- Clemson, Florida-FSU, UGA-GA Tech, Louisville-Kenucky, Iowa-Iowa St.
It was already pretty rare (even during Independence)for BYU to get a game on its schedule with a team from the Big Ten or SEC before this new reality. Many of the ones we did get were two for ones or one and done away games. I've put together a list of BYU non-conference home games I've been able to find against a team from the current SEC or Big Ten are listed below. I've started the ones that appear to be ones that we got as home-and-home deals. I only count 7 that have taken place since the beginning of the Independence era.
UCLA - 1985*
Washington -1985*
Texas.- 1988*
Oregon - 1989
UCLA - 1992*
UCLA - 1995*
Texas A&M - 1996*
Washington - 1997*
Washington - 1999*
Miss St - 2000*
USC - 2004*
UCLA - 2008*
Washington - 2010*
Texas - 2013
Miss St - 2016*
UCLA - 2016*
Wisconsin - 2017
Washington - 2019*
USC - 2019*
Arkansas - 2022*
I only count 7 that have taken place since the beginning of the Independence era.
We also have home games currently scheduled against the following:
Mich St - 2032*
Missouri - 2035*
At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see either of these games canceled just as Tennessee was a couple years ago.
My overall point is that it was already difficult to schedule games (especially home and homes) with Big Ten teams and SEC teams and it's going to be even more difficult and rare. That pretty much leaves us with the ACC. We are likely going to be scheduling a lot of games with ACC teams in future years to fill the P4 non conference most years moving forward.
