Unless we get a 5* level QB coming in, our highest upside for 2025 is Retzlaff.
Even with an incredibly talented transfer, Retzlaff may be the better option. ARod's offense is one of the most complex offenses in college football. Getting guys to who can run it well is hard. It takes a year in the system to be comfortable enough to run it well. But when we do run it well, it's effective. That's why we can take recruiting classes near the bottom of the B12 and perform near the top of the conference. Our players, more than other less complex offenses, get better with more time and familiarity with the offense.

Jake being in the system for 3 years is huge. That experience in the type of offense ARod runs will trump raw talent most of the time. I do think Jake is a reasonably talented QB. I think he's a very underrated runner who consistently has shown the ability to pick up yards with his legs. I think he has an average to above average arm for a FBS QB, and he has reasonable accuracy when he gets his feet set. Combine that with it being his 3rd year in the system and a full year of starting experience under his belt, I think he has significant upside.

Look at Kedon Slovis - a guy with above average QB skills, but who never really could master ARod's offense in the time he had. We signed him in December of '22, and that 7-8 months between December and the start of the '23 season wasn't enough time for Slovis to be fully competent in the offense. You'd need someone hugely talented to overcome the knowledge/familiarity gap and be a better option than Retzlaff.
