An analogy, a poor perhaps, but the only one I have.
My HCBW was a soccer coach of an academy she created. In such capacity, she traveled and attended national coaching clinics (and in fact taught some).
At the clinics, coaches would show a drill being demonstrated by national pool U-17 players.
My wife would often question the demonstrator, "well, that's great when you have naturally gifted national quality players, what happens when you're coaching a ten year old with two left feet?"
The point being, pro coaches have the most gifted players in the world, who will quickly grasp concepts. Step down, even to D1, and the players won't incorporate and learn concepts quite as quickly.
I am still baffled that the high trap is causing the team so much trouble though.
