A lot of times car manufacturers want you to under-inflate tires for the softer ride, so the ride is better but tire wear may not be. The ones I've seen that defy the advice seem to be Low Rolling Resistance (LRR) tires, which are harder so stay flat to the ground over a wider spread of tire pressures — often right up to that max value — and the roll easier when inflated at higher pressure, so give you longer tread wear and better fuel economy at the higher pressures.
