Because barring a miracle he's not going to find it all of a sudden in the last 17 games of the year against the toughest opponents in the college game. Note: I believe in miracles, and I'll be in the stands rooting loudly for one.
This is the thing with one-and-dones: they aren't freshmen. They're seniors. Either they produce right now or they don't. There is no time for them to "develop". If Demin was a normal recruit, I'd be over the moon about his potential. As it is, I don't CARE about his potential, because he won't realize it for BYU. Note: again, barring a miracle. There is a non-zero chance that Demin plays like this another month or so and his draft stock falls to late first round (it's hard to see how his performance would justify a lottery pick) (unless you're Washington) and decides to come back next year. It would take a miracle, but on that, see above.
There is something to be said for recruiting second-tier kids that will stay for 2-3 years. Trouble is, if you also recruit "NBA first-rounders" you have to play those guys instead, even if they miss 21 threes in a row.
