BYU's 3 point shooting defense observation, compared to Houston
2 cents coming from a BB novice...

Watching the Houston game, I noticed a big difference between how the two teams handled defending the open 3 point shot attempt when it happens. Time and time again, I see the BYU players (all of them, it seems), running to the open 3 point shooter as he prepares to shoot, taking a grand leap to desperately block the shot, and flying past the shooter who patiently waits for the leaping defender to fly past and takes a wide open 3 point attempt with time to use good shooting form. It seems quite rare that these desperate fly-in-the-air leaps ever work. Plus it often draws a second defender, leaving yet another player open.

Houston defenders handled it differently and it seemed coached into them. They would run to the open shooter without leaping, and just stick in front of the shooter. It seemed much more effective.

It looked like BYU did a somewhat better job avoiding the open 3 point shooter in the Texas Tech game. At least you could tell there was a mindset to balance the double team against leaving the 3 point shooter wide open.

Thoughts?
