I think what you mean to say is both teams would have only a little to gain, and
Nothing to lose.
Neither team would lose anything by losing to another good team. But since they didn’t make the playoffs, there’s only a little to gain.
Did BYU gain nothing and Colorado lose everything in the Alamo bowl? Definitely not.
