Oh, I remember the ice storms in Illinois. Driving was really different but my wife and I tried to avoid driving. I
remember driving up slight inclines and going backwards more than upwards, usually we had to turn around and use a different route.
Many, many, many years ago they would put spikes on horses to walk over winter wheat fields to poke holes in the ice so the winter wheat could get air. Otherwise the winter wheat would die before spring.
