Overall I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10. TLDR: Good writing and directing but it didn't need 10 episodes and felt a bait and switch at the end.
Pros: I thought it was well acted and directed for the most part.
I liked the Irish setting for the cinematography and just for something different. I can't say I've seen too many shows set in Ireland. The accents are fun to listen to.
I liked that they give character arch with the insurance agents. It seems too easy to make them rich insurance guys looking for ways to swindle a family out of their rightful inheritance. But they wrote it in a way that made him sympathetic and you find yourself rooting for him at times, which I didn't expect.
Ultimately, the insurance guys and the sisters were bad in their own ways but not as bad as the antagonist. So, it was interesting how I kept switching who I was rooting for depending on who they were concentrating on at the time.
I thought the guy who played the main antagonist did a great job. You really hated this guy and you felt he deserved to die. While some of his evilness was over the top, I thought they did a great job showing how a lot of abusers operate. Isolating the victim from family and friends, manipulation and gaslighting. I think they could have given him more depth to show how he became so twisted, but ultimately, I was good with that product.
Cons:
Like all Apple+ shows they make sure to check their DEI boxes. Every time I start a series I just wait to see how they make sure to cram that in there. It's just always so forced. You know, that if it doesn't have that diversity story line in there to start, they make sure something is added before giving it the green light. I shouldn't bug me but it does.
It was way too long. It didn't need 10 episodes. You knew early on some of the details of his death, so as they planned each new murder attempt, you knew it wasn't going to work. Which, is mostly fine, but I don't think they needed to dedicate an entire episode to each failed attempt. Maybe for the first one. But after that you could probably get a couple attempts in per episode. This should have probably been 6-8 episodes.
I feel we got a bait and switch at the end. You spend 9 episodes believing these sisters (other than the wife) must have been involved in the death, otherwise why are they so nervous about the insurance guys investigation? (Assuming it makes sense at all for them to even agree talk to them) In almost every episode they talk about being nervous about being put in jail. So, you keep waiting to find out how things end up falling into place for his eventual murder by said sisters only to find out the abused wife ends up doing it. Which brings me to...
How the wife murders him. They purposely make him a big, domineering type character so he's more intimidating. But then his petite wife is able to strangle him to death? I can't imagine him not being able to pretty easily over power her in that situation.
You find satisfaction in her ultimately taking him out, because he deserved it and she was the victim. And it's fairly creative how they try to cover it up. But, ultimately, not very believable.
Oh, and the cheating sister bugged me. They really make her very sympathetic. If roles were reversed, I don't think they do that with a male character. But, overall, I do prefer showing the protagonists with deep flaws, so I will overlook this.
Anyway, I enjoyed it but, at this point, I probably won't watch the second season. It was just too drawn out and the constant jumping from present day to the past got tiring. But maybe after a bit i'll feel different.
