We’ve sent multiple kids to the BYU ACT camps, and they’ve had a good experience, and there’s probably a confidence boost that comes from doing so.
But the meat and potatoes of test prep is having them do a practice session on their own, and then evaluate it with you afterwards. Not just scoring themselves and shooting for better next time.
Before checking the answers, have them mark which ones they’re confident with, and which were guesses. Then, when you compare to the answer key, you get a much clearer picture of the needed review.
Most of the $50-60 practice manuals come with a handful of practice tests, and explanations on each question of why certain answers were right or wrong.
After doing it with a parent or tutor several times, they’re probably able to self-assess on their own. But the value is in the post-test review, not just checking the score.
