This is so true. 2001 has an objectively lazy plot. Sure, there are some beautiful visuals, neat effects,
some good set pieces; but people that pretend it is a great art-house film are just being pretentious. There are elements of the film that are amazing and ground-breaking, but the plot of the film itself is garbage. If someone claims it is a great movie, it's not because they are smarter or have more philosophical depth; they are just more comfortable lying about liking movies that are actually crap. It is so overstuffed with long scenes that are meaningless to the plot other than just stuffing the movie with more visuals. Its pacing is lazy.
Making a film intentionally vague and ambiguous is generally lazy. I don't think even Kubrick has a clue what the intent of the plot of his movie is. It's not a deep film, it's just a poorly written film. There are set pieces that are good enough. But elements such as HAL are such a small part of the film that it can't overcome the self-indulgent aspects of the film.
Most overrated film of all time. But, yeah, I like the Blue Danube.
