The problem was not the bye, it was the seeding.
There is no way that ASU and BSU were in the top four programs, this year, The teams should have been seeded as they were ranked:
Oregon
UGA
Texas
Penn State
Look for the CFP to tweak the format. The five highest conference champs will still have an automatic berth but the bye teams will be the four highest ranked, whether or not they won a conference championship
