Actually, it does.
IIRC it's something abut how it combusts. Years ago I bought a car that required premium. So I asked my BIL (who teaches engine repair at a university and who does a "click and clack" show on the radio) whether I really need to spend the extra for Premium.

He said that the engine is tuned for premium and regular will cause performance problems and structural damage.

So I have spent extra ever since.
