The key is he just does it as part of his nature. Jumps into the arena with Adolin when he knows he’s probably going to lose.
Yes he’s trying to help others the same way he has before - but this one is different because it’s painfully obvious he has no idea what a therapist is or how to actually help someone with mental illness. I think this arc would have been better had it not used such colloquial language regarding his efforts with Szeth. But the end result is that Kaladin learned to live with his failure and choose to do / protect without feeling obligated to do so.
