You know that awesome SNL sketch about the guy who buys his wife a Lexus for Christmas, and she gets angry at him for buying a car without discussing it together? I loved that sketch so much I wanted to live it.

... In prank form.

So for Christmas, I rented a new Lexus on Turo, and borrowed one of those giant bows from the local Lexus dealership (I asked if I could buy one, but it turns out those giant bows cost about $1k, so if you're ever in the market this is a situation where it makes more sense to lease).

I jumped through a whole bunch of hoops to set things up just right (hid the car down the street. Kept the bow in my car in the garage, woke up early to set things up.)

Everything was timed perfectly. After everything had been unwrapped, we gave our kids their one last surprise present and then ... "hey honey I think I see one more gift."

Well son of a gun ... just like the SNL sketch, my wife was very upset that I had made a incredibly irresponsible financial decision without consulting with her first. The part I didn't anticipate is that telling her it was a prank didn't make her feel that much better.

She was ... not impressed.

So what's the moral of the story? Love and learn. Here's to a new year where hopefully I'm a little wiser.
