In the postgame Bielema said the gesture wasn’t related to the substitutions,
but rather the kickoff earlier in the game.

Bielema said there is an unwritten rule when a receiving team does the T sign it means they’re not going to return it. It tells the kicking team to “back off” and not engage.

Bielema said South Carolina made the T sign as the receiving team and then basically tricked Illinois by still returning the kickoff. He said it wasn’t illegal but was disappointed that South Carolina would do that . . . and he claimed that’s why he made the T sign in front of the South Carolina team. (Voicing his displeasure.)
