1. Richie Saunders was amazing. Drove to the hoop, rebounded, defended, and filled it up from 3. When he’s open his shooting stroke is awesome.
2. Demin has a load of talent and an unbelievable upside, but he is definitely a work in progress. I’m confident he’ll continue to improve, and as he improves BYU will also improve.
3. BYU defense was much better today than in some previous games. It appears the team is finally figuring out what the coaches want and expect on defense.
4. I’m usually pretty passive when I’m watching a BYU game on TV. But today I yelled out loud at the refs several times for not calling extremely obvious fouls. Fouss was getting hacked every time he touched the ball, and nothing. Mags gets knocked completely off his dribble and nothing.
5. Baker may not be the most physically gifted player or the best ball handler, but he is a basketball player. He makes plays and can score.
6. Catchings is going to be very impressive by the end of the season. He’s got a ton of athletic ability as well as a nice outside shot. As he figures out how to play at this level and in this system he will be so hard to guard.
7. Appears things are beginning to gel for this team. The defense is better and the ball movement is better, but still not as consistent as it needs to be.
8. It’s a great feeling to know that most teams, even in conference, won’t be significantly more athletic than BYU. That is a nice change from years past. And it appears it will only get better with AJ etc. coming to BYU.
9. Tonight was Saunder’s night. Last game was Catchings’ game. It’s nice that BYU has a number of players who have the talent and ability to be the best player in a particular game. Knell and Baker have had games and they will again. They’ll shoot a lot better in a lot of games than they did today. Fouss has dominated some teams. Didn’t today, but he will against some teams in the future. Demin will shine a lot brighter in some games in the future than he did today. It’s nice not having to rely on 1 player.
10. This will be a fun team to watch during the rest of the season. I’m still in the camp that thinks BYU will likely be .500 or slightly better than .500 in the regular B12 season. But I expect them to be playing a lot better at the end of the regular season than they are today. If they can stay healthy and continue to improve, they will not be an easy out come tournament time.
Go Cougars!
