I don't think anyone's disputing, for instance, that the shovel pass was high and hard. Nobody's saying Retzlaff doesn't make mistakes.
But there seem to be a lot of people working really hard to find all the stuff Retzlaff did bad, but those same people don't seem to give him credit where it's due. Nor do they seem to acknowlege there are a lot of moving parts in any play - the QB isn't playing in a vacuum.
So when someone says "that's 100% on Retzlaff," well, did Retzlaff block? Could it have been caught, even if it wasn't an easy catch? Was the receiver being hit as the ball reached him?
I just don't know why people here are working so hard to show how bad Retzlaff is, when he was the QB for a team that went 11-2.
For instance, he's been hammered here for the end zone interception - yeah, it was a bad decision and/or execution. But completely ignored is the fact that on that drive, he picked up a third down and long by running for a first down. And then later he picked up a first on 3rd and 10 with a 24-yard pass. And that drive, while it didn't end up in a score took up 7 minutes of game time, making a comeback that much harder for Colorado.
And finally, so many of the things he makes mistakes at are things that another offseason of practice, study, and gameplanning can help overcome. He'll be a senior, and BYU has a history of excelling when they have a senior QB who has been in the system for a while - a system which, apparently, is quite complext in the first place. But there are idiots here who would rather bring in some unknown and unidentified QB from somewhere else and hand him the position. "At least make him battle for the spot," they say. He did. He beat out Bohannan for the starting job.
The best thing for this offense is the continuity of a guy leading them who's shown more heart than just about anyone else who's played the position, and who led them to 11 wins. The defense looks like it could even be better next year. BYU doesn't need Tom Brady at QB. I'm fine with Jake.
