The most disappointing aspect of the first years of the Kalani era was lack of results on the recruiting front.
Recruiting was thought to be Kalani's strong suit when he was hired, especially following the Mendenhall era.
Results were frustratingly slow to materialize.
But look at the past four recruiting cycles. There is a reason that the team was 11-2 this year. I don't think
there was a single game this year in which I felt we had lass talent than the opponent.
On a yearly basis:
2022:
Kingsley Suamataia. Transfer from Oregon. Two year starter at OT. Drafted by Chiefs after JR year.
Chris Brooks. Unfortunately injured so only saw glimpses of his ability. Undrafted but in his second year
on NFL roster. Currently with GB.
Mory Bamba. Has struggled with injuries. Major contributor to BYU's awesome secondary this year.
Hopefully will return for 2025 season. JC transfer.
Gabe Jeudy-Lally. Started at CB and was excellent. Transfer from Vandy. Played one season at BYU and
transferred to be closer to home.
Evan Johnson. HS recruit. Very lightly recruited. Recruited on measurables. Has paid off in a big way.
Started multiple games this season and played extremely well. Great int vs Colorado. Looks to be
a major contributor the next two seasons.
Others of note: Cody Hagan, McKenzie brothers. Talented athletes who could develop into really big
contributors.
2023: Possibly the greatest overall group in BYU history.
Jake Retzlaff. JC QB. Good enough to lead Cougs to 11-2 season. Not great but tough competitor who
will hopefully improve and lead team to a great 2025 season.
Harrison Taggart. Transfer LB from Oregon. Missed on him out of Corner Canyon but brought him home
after his FR season. Started all season in 2024. Part of one of greatest LB groups in BYU history.
Blazing fast for MLB. Possible NFL career. Maybe a little undersized at next level. Likely two more
years of exceptional LB play here.
Caleb Etienne. Ok State transfer. CB whipping boy in 2023. Deservedly so. Turned it around in 2024 with
position change from OG to OT. NFL career a real possibility. Protected Jake' blind side. One of the best
stories imaginable.
Will Ferrin. Transfer K from Boise. Just had perhaps the greatest season ever for a BYU K. Money in clutch
situations. And Cougs have him for another season.
Waylen Lapuaho. OG trasfer from Utah State. Has started for two years. Excellent player. Should help
anchor OL in 2025.
Darius Lassiter. WR transfer from Eastern Michigan. Major contributor in 23 and 24. Deep threat. Made one
of the greatest plays in BYU history to beat Ok State in final minute. May be back in 2025.
Keelan Marion. All American return man. Role as WR gradually increased over course of 24 season.
Very fast. Looks to be a big player for the 25 season.
LJ Martin. HS RB recruit who we flipped from Stanford commitment. Has had some injury problems but
has shown the ability to be a featured RB. Already closing in on 1500 all purpose career yards.
Others who have started or will likely be major contributors to program:
Eddie Heckard
Kanden Garrett
Crew Wakely
Jackson Cravens
Kedon Slovis
Isaiah Bagnah
AJ Vongphachanh
Siale Esera
JoJo Phillips
2024:
Jack Kelly. Weber LB transfer. Very fast. Part of great BYU LB trio. Probable NFL career ahead. Hopefully
returns for 2025 season
Marque Collins. Weber CB transfer. Gave Cougs solid CB play in 2024 as part of outstanding secondary.
Austin Leausa. Transfer OL from Southern Utah. Key piece of 2024 OL. Back for 2025.
Isaiah Jatta. OL transfer from Colorado. RS for 2024 who was pressed into PT at end of season due to
injuries. Acquitted himself very well. Probable starter at OT in 2025.
Ryner Swanson. HS TE recruit. Has the look of a future All Conference TE. Will miss the 25 and 26 seasons
on a mission.
Faletau Satuala. HS S recruit. Huge get for Jay Hill. Originally thought to be headed to Utah. Played considerable
number of snaps in 2024. Seemingly has a very bright future.
Tommy Prassas. Unheralded HS S recruit. Played a lot in 2024. Much better than could have been expected.
Had a few big moments. Likely big contributor for next three seasons.
Therrian Alexander. HS CB recruit. The kind of guy BYU rarely gets. Highly recruited. Played a fair amount in 24.
Likely will be a big player for Cougs.
Jonathan Kebeya. HS CB recruit. Similar situation and outlook as Alexander. Bright future.
2025:
Keanu Tanuvasa. Huge get on multiple levels. Fills a pressing need at DT for 2025 and 2026 (assuming he stays
in college). Expect him to be one of best ever at DT for Cougs.
Andrew Gentry. Michigan OL Fills need at OT. If he can stay healthy should be an excellent OT in 2025.
Likely starter.
Tausili Akana. Hyped recruit coming out of HS. Transfer from Texas where he didn't play much. If can play
to his HS recruiting ranking would be a major player at DE.
Anisi Purcell. DL transfer from Southern Utah. Should be a contributor in 2025.
Carsen Ryan. TE transfer from Utah. Fills a pressing need at TE. Should see the field a lot in 2025.
Lamason Waller. Hyped HS WR signing. Will be in a crowded WR room in 25 which will make it hard to get
a lot of PT. One of the highest rated WR recruits Cougs have ever gotten.
It is hard to overstate the haul the coaches have made in getting the program where it is today. 2025 should
be one of the most talented rosters BYU has ever had. I am sure that I have missed some guys. Many more
talented recruits who are not mentioned above as they will likely be on missions.
Kalani and staff deserve a tremendous amount of credit for what they have accomplished on the recruiting
front. And with the financial playing field finally equal with other Big12 schools I expect things to get even better.
Glory days ahead for Cougs!
GO COUGS!!!
