Calling BYU Sports Psychologists
I’ve loved this year’s football success spending more time reading social media commentary on our BYU football team than ever before. Many a Sunday reading X and Cougarboard during church along with media reports. I consider it all addendums to Come Follow Me.

Whenever BYU was the underdog, it seems as if we played with a chip on our shoulders that we didn’t display when favored. That attitude produced big plays in all three phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams).

Against both Kansas and ASU, we played not to lose rather than to win. Conservative game planning and just going through the motions during long stretches in both games. It felt that way against Utah for most of the game as well.

A great part about the bowl game for me was that we were prepared and loose. The players were having fun. I saw it on the field and on the sidelines. I loved the detailed game planning; 17 of 20 defensive plays the first half were unique including dropping defensive lineman into passing lanes. The offensive and special teams gadget plays whether they worked or not seemed to keep the players loose and in a particularly nice touch some players who didn’t get much playing time during the rest of the season were able to contribute in the game.

Moral of this post: The mental part of the game matters. We need to figure out how to make the bowl game mindset more consistent going forward.
