Not counting today's game, BYU was #18 in total defense, which is excellent. They were #6 in the nation in kick return average and had 3 TDs, to go along with two punt return TDs. I believe we led the nation in return TDs. We had a top 5 if not top 3 FG kicker this year. Our defense and special teams were incredible this year.
The offense was up and down, which many do not want to acknowledge. Retzlaff started the season strong with an 18/7 TD to INT ratio. His final five games of the season he had only 2 TDs and 5 INTs. His overall QBR will place him in the 60's among QBs after today's game, right in the middle of the pack. We were the third worst in the Big 12 in 3rd down conversion. The team was #59 in the nation in total offense not counting today's game, which will drop us a bit because we were below our average.
Significantly, every single team that made the playoff this season was rated higher than BYU in total offense. Only 7 of the playoff teams rated higher than us in total defense, so the offense is what needs to get better if we want to take the next step toward greatness in 2025.
