heart went dark when a disheveled couple walked by me with a filthy blanket in a shopping cart and their dog sitting in/on it.

They didn't look to be disheveled in a homeless way, they looked to be disheveled in a -we don't bathe and have never cleaned our trailer way mixed with 'isn't our doggy with a dirty Christmas sweater on cute?'

I thought of the next person to use that cart.
