…to catch up with where the game of basketball has evolved. “I think many on here are ready to relegate Hall to the back-up PG position” Many on CB are stuck in the past with this antiquated notion that you only run 1 PG and 1 SG and 1 SF and 1 PF, etc and wondering how can you play two PG’s at the same time.
We saw last year that at times BYU struggled largely due to not having enough ball handling and playmaking on the floor and the teams that seemed to give us the hardest times were teams that had multiple PG’s on the floor who could attack and play downhill (Texas Tech, Duquesne, Houston, etc). Fortunately we have a coaching staff that understands this and isn’t so limited in their approach.
On questions around playing time and rotations, according to EvanMiya, 7 of BYU’s 10 most efficient rotations have Traore at the 5. Ironically for player lineups in the Big12 that have played at least 50 possessions together so far this season, the most efficient (highest margin of efficiency between offense and defense) is Demin, Knell, Saunders, Catchings and Traore. Also, 9 of BYU’s 10 highest margin of efficiency rotations feature 2 PG’s, mainly a combo of Baker, Demin, and Hall, but even Stewart and Crawford are in a rotation each that are in BYU’s top 10.
I think it shows we need to keep up with the dual PG’s in the rotation and even keep a place for Mag as a regular (he’s in 3 of the top 10 lineups at BYU).
