Ha. Sorry. A lot of people think it references Brandon’s LDS background. It doesn’t.
It’s about a guy who worked with returning soldiers who were suffering from PTSD among other things. He had soul, he cared about these men and women soldiers, but he himself wasn’t a soldier. Brandon and this guy became close friends and to honor him the line was featured in the song.

There is much more to it than that but that’s the gist of it.
