He accidentally signed up to live in the band dorm and it was too late to find other housing when he realized it. He said that he went to the audition but they never called on him and he just kinda slipped through the cracks.

For 4 years he traveled with the band and did on field performances by pretending to play his instrument and walking where everybody else walked.
