My large family solution to chewing with your mouth closed:
If he has to ask twice he would pop you in the mouth at the table.
Never saw him actually pop someone in the mouth, but the tone of the threat was enough to scare us all into eating with our mouths closed.
My parents were actually quite gentle, never really spanked or raised voices, but this threat felt real lol
