We only saw other missionaries every 6 weeks when we would take the 5 hour bus ride into the city for zone conference. It was kind of a coveted area to be in, so far away from the capital.
I (S1) was senior companion with a cool bro junior companion (J1). The other senior comp (S2) was my comp from the MTC, cool dude. Transfers came, and (S2) was going to train a greenie. Day of transfers we sent departing junior comp off to new area on grey hound bus back to the capital (South America). Us 3 remained together all day until the evening bus arrived with greenie. We decided to pull a prank on the new greenie (J2). J1 and S2 would switch name tags for the evening, then we would get together in the morning for breakfast and switch for the big reveal and swap the tags back.
When you go out to this area for the first time, you travel by yourself, super weird as a missionary, and they just tell you, get off at the very last stop after 5 hours and your comp will meet you at the bus station. So this greenie has been sitting alone for the first time in 2 months, and only knows the name of his companion, and its already late, 10pm. The 3 of us meet him at the station. Bro gets off the bus and headed off with my junior comp, and my MTC comp spends the night at my place, aka "Splits", lol, since he was the DL.
Turns out the greenie was an air force vet and recent convert and had a crazy life story, cool dude. He stayed up all night talking with my comp telling him his story. My comp couldn't resist and spoiled it early at like 2am and said "Hey man, I gotta tell you, I'm not your companion" Dude was like "Uhhhh, if you're not my companion, who are you? and Where's my companion?" Greenie about had a heart attack, my comp explained it all and we all met up in the morning and had a good laugh. Loved that area and those dudes.
