K. Hill catches half of his drops, and Retzlaff throws those 2 endzone fades to him better and they don't get picked off, far less people would be complaining about TEs.
The TE pass of years past has gone to Roberts, whose done just fine generally. So, the play is still generally run, just someone with a single-digit jersey is catching them instead of someone with a leading 8 on their jersey.
The whole job of the TE is to be an extra blocker and to create a mismatch in the secondary. Our mismatch TEs couldn't block at the LOS well enough, and our blocking TEs, when needed to, did convert some plays, but most of those plays went to a WR instead.
Our WR1-WR4 depth and skill-gap in the past 3-4 years has been FAR better than anything pre-Arod. When your WR3 and WR4 are good enough to be getting yards every game, you dont always need a TE1 catching balls.
