tarrifs on some manufactured goods from Japan in the 80's. The myth that "ALL" tarrifs are bad is just not true. When you have a "trade deficit" (which we clearly have) tarrifs are a powerful tool to grow the economy.
The US had a "protectionists" policy from its founding in 1776 up till the 1970's. It's these "protectionists" policies that transformed the US from a small "agrarian society" to the world's lone superpower (China is about to challenge that thanks to the US).
