have some great potential TEs in house, but I sure don't see us using them like we could. (All stats are per ESPN for 2024)
1. Ryner Swanson 6'4" 245 - 8 catches for 61 yards 0 TDs
2. Noah Moeaki 6'3" 240 - 0 catches for 0 yards
3. Jackson Bowers 6'5" 245 - 0 catches for 0 yards
4. Ethan Erickson 6'5" 240 0 catches for 0 yards
5. Mata'ava Ta'ase 6'3" 255 - 8 catches for 79 yards 3 TDs
Total 16 catches for 140 yards and 3 TDs. That is deplorable considering the TE usage of years gone by.
I am fearful some of them may leave if they aren't utilized more rather than just blocking TEs.
I really wish that BYU would utilize TEs like Utah has done, especially the BYU teams of the past. Even Caleb Lohner has 4 catches for 54 yards and 4 TDs this year. 4 for 4 and I'm not even a Utah fan. Kuithe has caught 35 for 505 yards and 6 TDs before he was injured. That's not amazing but still 39 catches for 559 yards and 10 TDs which kind of compares to BYU TE production from before.
Consider these great BYU TEs:
Isaac Rex (2020) 22 receptions 320 yards, 6 TDs (2018) 37 receptions, 429 yards, 12 TDs
Matt Bushman - (2019) 47 receptions, 688 yards, 4 TDs
Dennis Pitta - (2008, 2009) 2008 83 receptions, 1,083 yards, 6 TDs; 2009 62 receptions, 829 yards, 8 TDs
Johnny Harline - (2006) 58 receptions, 935 yards, 12 TDs
Going clear back: (I realize this is 34 and 44 years ago, but they sure bring back great memories to me.) I think some of our current TEs could be utilized like these two.
1. Chris Smith - (1990) 74 receptions, 1262 yards, 3 TDs
2. Clay Brown - (1980) 53 receptions, 1164 yards, 18 TDs
After this long post I just miss some of the great output that we had from TEs through these past 40 years!
