There is always room to critique stupid, preventable, coachable, correctable mistakes. If this was the first time on this field the cleats have been an issue, then you have a fair point. But it's not. It's not even the second time.
Championship programs are built by paying attention to detail. Saban did it for a decade at bama. Pep did it for a decade at City. Brady did it for two decades in the NFL. You could counter by saying "oh sure, pick some of the greatest of all time to try to make your point". And you would be exactly right. I picked them because they paid attention to detail which made them great.
If BYU wants 10 wins or 11 wins to become the norm and not a once every decade or two happy occurrence, then they have to pay attention to the little things.
What cleats they wear. How to manage the clock/TOs better. When the OC has to tell the quarterback to run the play that needs to be run. How to not get caught inside defensively when setting the edge of the line of scrimmage. Sitting a player that commits a procedure penalty. Sitting a player that doesn't concentrate on seeing the ball into his hands on an uncontested catch. Being laser focused for the next opponent after a big win.
These aren't criticisms or critiques. Their observations of deficiencies. And if BYU is serious about being a team that's a legitimate playoff contender, they're going to have to figure out how to do these things.
