Maybe, just maybe, defenses run different looks and confuse receivers, especially in crucial moments of the game.
It's not just "follow the dotted line on the play book". It's also not just, "is it man or zone."
Also, maybe ARod is just trying to point out that it's not always just "bad throw" by the qb-- even when it looks that way on tv.
