They won the Pac and really thought they were a blueblood when everyone else in the football world has thought of the Pac as an afterthought for quite some time. Nobody was showing up for games. The biggest names in the conference knew they needed to get out and try and create a new identity and did (although good luck to USC and UCLA, I don't see this ending well for them). Heck Utah fans brag about almost beating the 2nd string guys from Ohio St in the Rose Bowl.

They have come into the Big 12 and been punched in the mouth. This conference is far more physical than what they are used to.

You want to know why they have convinced themselves all of this? Because they know on a level playing field they cannot compete with BYU. BYU has better academics (and soon a medical school!), more alumni, a better campus, a better brand, more money from donors...etc, etc. Utah is in trouble. They need Scalley to be an A+ hire. If not then all of these offensive and defensive lineman start signing up to play down in Provo for more money. BYU can get offensive players as well which has been a huge struggle for Utah who tries to create an offensive identity by signing whoever was kicked off their team recently.

I am here for all of it. I'm still surprised Harlan wasn't fired for making the University look so foolish. But I guess it is on brand.
