My great-great-great grandmother was Mary Ann Payne Mellor in the Martin Handcart Company. She was the mother who stopped and said she couldn't go any further and her oldest daughter prayed for help and a miraculous pie appeared. The miracle of that pie is what kept Mary Ann going the rest of the way to the Salt Lake Valley.
As it so happens, Mary Ann gave birth to only more one child after arriving in Utah — a son named John Carlos.
John Carlos is my great-great grandfather.
No pie, no John Carlos. No John Carlos, no Six Foot Seven.
I really like pie.
