himself and the line of scrimmage after he had escaped the pocket to make the throw. Instead of taking advantage of all the open space in front of him to run up toward the line to make the throw, he sat back about 9 yards behind it when he released the ball. Probably felt panicked in the moment, having just eluded a sack to get open enough to make a throw at all. Maybe you could argue that he might not have made it all the way up to the line before getting hit, but with his legs, I think he definitely could have given himself at least 5 more yards before making that throw and would have had more forward momentum to launch it into the end zone.
Oof...what could have been. Never mind the refs choosing to not throw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct on the coach during the review process, or for the fans rushing the field before the game was officially signaled and declared to be over, or for fans and players standing over and taunting Chase as he lay on the ground in the aftermath of his Hail Mary catch occurring just shy of the end zone. Any of which could have put BYU and Jake 15 yards close to the end zone to make that throw, which certainly would have enabled him to give the ball the distance it needed to get to the end zone then.
Then to think if Chase had been able to make that same catch he did but actually in the end zone. Or had ASU's secondary caged him in so bad in that they end up with a massive PI penalty that could have then moved BYU up to the 20 yard line and given BYU and Jake yet a 2nd attempt, and a more precise throw in that situation. Then you'd have the possibility for something like another Beck to Harline moment to have developed.
But I get it. There was no way refs were going to call anything more with that amped up crowd and ASU's head coach literally breathing down their necks. After what unfolded during their review and decision to give back BYU that extra second, they were probably prioritizing their personal safety from then on.
