It’s the culture of youth sports. Vetting doesn’t solve it
Sadly, the vast majority of parents are not willing to put in the time or effort to Coach. It’s not like there’s a long waiting list of people hoping to get called up to Coach.

Instead, people that tend to be overly intense are going to be more likely to coach. They also often have a kid on the team that they think too highly of or want to give them more opportunity by coaching.

Regardless, people take youth sports way too seriously. They ought to have a meeting before every game and recite some type of pledge:

“This is a youth sports game. I will not take it too seriously. I will not verbally or physically assault the referees. I will not allow our parents to do the same. The referees are paid, but it’s not a lot and they aren’t professionals. They are doing their best. I am not going to ruin this experience for the kids.”
