Ten Game thoughts
Went to game yesterday. Ten random thoughts:
1) Simply cannot get behind 0-21 and have much hope of winning. Indy can probably give us an exact number but I doubt
more than 5-10% of teams getting in a 0-21 hole come back and win.
2) Having said that I was impressed and proud of the team coming back and actually having a chance to take the lead in
the fourth quarter. Team could easily have just packed it in. Not doing so is a credit to the players as individuals.
3) Scattebo is one of the best RBs I have seen in my 50 years of watching college FB. The guy takes and dishes out a tremendous
amount of physical punishment. And he is much quicker, faster and has more moves than I would have guessed. Seemed
better in person than on TV. Without him I think we win that game easily. They could not run at all with anyone else.
4) Our lines got their butts kicked in the first half. I was shocked at the way ASU completely dominated the LOS. Our DL was often
getting pushed 2-3 yards off the LOS. Give Scattebo a running start and no contact until he is well past the LOS and holding him
to five yards seemed like a moral victory. Seems like the inevitable result of years of subpar recruiting both OL and DL. I think
recruiting those positions has picked up considerably the past three years. Hopefully will result in greatly enhanced line play.
5) I thought Leavitt looked like a solid QB, especially for a RS FR. ASU should be solid at QB for the next three years.
6) So many plays that could have changed the game. The sack nullified by D holding, the two INTs, the miss by the safety
resulting in the long run by the WR, the kickoff that bounced off our player, etc. Of course, every game has several such
plays. This game seemed to have more than usual to me.
7) I have seen Retzlaff live four times now. I think is a somewhat above average QB. Certainly not elite. But he is a really
tough kid who gives it everything he has. Running down the DB on that second INT gave us a minimal chance to come
back. I think most QBs simply hang their heads and don't make that tackle. I think he is a good leader and the team responds
to him. Although I get frustrated with his lack of accuracy on a lot of throws we are really lucky to have him. Like most of our
past senior QBs, he will likely be an exceptionally good college QB next year.
8) Game day experience was what I expected. A college kid exiting the restroom before the game shouting "F the Mormons"
repeatedly at the top of his lungs. Props to the 40ish ASU fan who grabbed him by the elbow and told him to shut up.
Student section chanting "F BYU" om multiple occasions. But nothing really out of the ordinary. Don't like it but no
reason to get worked up about anything I experienced. I understand that others had a much worse experience.
9) It is truly amazing the amount of support that BYU has on the road. I realize that there are a lot of Church members down
here in the Phoenix area but the crowd in my estimation had to be nearly one third Cougar fans. Dillingham made a big deal
about not selling tix to BYU people. He was certainly right to be concerned. BYU crowd got loud when given something to
cheer about.
10)Dillingham is a complete tool. I have heard him several times on the radio since he was hired last year. He comes off as
a rah rah HS type of guy. I will say that he has turned the program around after the disaster that was previously ASU athletic
department much faster than I could have imagined. Very impressive. He obviously has his players totally bought into the
program. He has a QB for the next few years which is half the battle. That said, his tantrum during the review was
inexcusable. He threw gas on an already smoldering fire with his antics. There should be significant punishment coming
from the BIG12. If there isn't officials will be considered fair game for whatever abuse coaches want to heap upon them.

One more thing. If you are ever attending a game at ASU stadium in the future you might do well to park west of the stadium
in the lot by the McKinsey offices. Just west of Mill Ave.Ended up there and so thankful we did. $10.00 and was out of there and
on freeway headed home in ten minutes. Easiest exit ever for me at a sporting event. Easy 15 minute walk to stadium or just hop
on the light rail right there which drops you off right next to stadium.

Go Cougs!!!
