Three Coach Roderick interviews reveal the dark place we're at with our offensive scheme, and why...

All three were lengthy (10-20 minutes) and nothing below is taken out of context.
I'll use my language to paraphrase what he said - anyone should be able to find the actual cuts/quotes on YouTube.

(1) Dec 2023 - last year:
BYU had just finished a terrible year-end losing streak - the offense was anemic.
Coach Roderick said BYU's offense was underperforming because our run game was not there.
He said that the scheme is a run/run-option scheme, and requires a solid run game as its foundational piece.
Though the scheme is explosive with its downfield pass potential, without that run/rpo foundation the whole offense comes unraveled! (He meant that it was all systemically wound together, a startling admission.)

(2) Fast-forward to Spring 2024:
Coach Roderick said that the team worked hard on the running backs room through the offseason and that there would be great improvement this year - which there was.
HOWEVER, the interviewer asked him about the aggressive downfield passing attack that generationally BYU has been known for, if that is still in the program.
The coach then went on at length, with enthusiasm, to agree and assert that "that's BYU" and that all of those explosive passing schemes are contained in their approach, absolutely, and is their intention.

(3) Fast-forward to this past week, November 2024:
This particular interviewer pointed out that in the 2-minute drill BYU has proven all year they can aggressively and quickly get the ball down the field through the air. He asked: "Is BYU thinking of going more uptempo in this way?"
Coach says perhaps, but that's not the general plan, because if we do that our defense gets tired because we score too quickly, so he wants more steadiness and doesn't want to do that.

Combining what we learn from these three interviews, is it not plain to see why we're tied in knots on offense?

It was telling today in this Arizona State game that when we were down three touchdowns, this got the coaching staff's attention.

We had to move, and quickly. Then we had no problem rapidly driving right down the field on Arizona State for scores, or into the red zone, on four consecutive drives!

We still have so many great players that we're not getting the ball to, regularly, downfield, all throughout the game.

Instead, it appears that we're fitting our outstanding players to a scheme instead of the scheme to our best players - which many D1 coaches disagree with and have said that at the end of the day this is a recipe for failure.

I don't know if we're going to cure Coach Roderick at this point. He's a good coordinator, but can he take us to the next level without major changes in scheme and approach?
