It was supposed to be a ladies night out for my wife with daughters and granddaughters but one daughter was sick so my wife insisted I go since she wanted to use all 10 tickets.
I had seen Wicked on Broadway and enjoyed it but movie musicals are not usually my thing (I make an exception for Sound of Music). To be honest, I remembered very little about Wicked other than the general story line. I had low expectations.
I was pleasantly surprised.
Things I liked:
- I know nothing about Ariana Grande. She is a surprisingly good actress for a singer (she does spoiled, self-absorded and entitled very well). She was very entertaining.
- The singing was not over the top and constant. There was more dialogue than singing
- The visual effects were very good and did not look fake
- It kept me awake even in the comfortable recliner seats at the Jordan Commons Megaplex
Things I did not particularly like:
- It's only part 1 and was over 2.5 hours long
- The ending seemed to drag out a bit too long
I give it a solid 8 out of 10 but you have to like adaptations of Broadway musicals. Lower the score if that is not your thing. Again, it was better than I expected but I had low expectations.
