Trapped a couple dozen this fall. Had the same problem. They were licking
the peanut butter clean.

Here's the hack; put a small piece of cloth in the metal where the bait goes and take pliers and clamp it closed with the cloth trapped in. Rub the peanut butter into the cloth. Mice will try to tug the cloth out and...wham.

The snap traps with the yellow Swiss cheese work better than the standard metal ones and I'm switching in that direction.

Glue traps with a dap of PB in the middle work great. But for me, they are usually still alive the next morning and snap traps are cheaper.
