I think it's more about knowing your personel than it is about throwing it ever and throwing it situationally. There's a reason you don't throw that with Jake Retzlaff and there's a reason you don't see it thrown on 1st or 2nd down most of the time
The crazy fade that Jaren threw to Puka to beat Boise a couple of years ago was on a 4th down. Strength on strength, down to one play. It worked out, but you're essentially throwing a 50/50 ball up with a QB who throws it well and your NFL pro bowl receiver miraculously catches it.
Contrast that to Saturday. Jake Retzlaff throwing on 1st down to a blocking TE matched up against an NFL corner. Why? But, I guess it worked well in practice so you got that
