In a season that has far exceeded expectations, we lost a game we should have lost. Here are my issue with the coaching
on Saturday.

1. Roberts and Retzlaff both talked about the team not being ready. As a coaching staff you CAN'T allow this to happen. You just can't. It has happened far too many times under Kalani and it happened again on Saturday. Getting the team focused and ready to play when you are ranked #6 shouldn't have been hard.

2. I hated, absolutely hated the call to kick a FG in the 3rd quarter. This is a team that has gone for it all year long and we decided at that moment we would instead settle. To me it was basically a 3 yard play away from winning the game. Even if you don't get it they have poor field position and your defense comes on the field fired up to hold them. Settling for 3 just felt like it was going to lose us the game there. A 10 1/2 minute drive that ends in a FG is a win for the defense and builds momentum.

3. I hated our play calling on the last drive once we got 1st and goal from the 15. 3 straight runs when the defense was expecting them was moronic. Running a jet sweep in that situation wasn't smart either in my opinion. Jake's audible to the option was poor. Then a penalty followed by a throw you can't make. Conversely I loved the call in the first half that resulted in an interception. I don't particularly love the decision to throw the fade, but passing in that situation was working all the way down the field and Marion was wide open and Retzlaff made the wrong read. It happens, but those types of plays from QBs cost you games.

4. The one part of the punt that is not talked about is the defense. Why in the world were we in man coverage with no help on 4th and 17? If man underneath why was there no safety over the top yelling at that guy to get out of the way? The one thing that would have prevented that from happening is just playing zone to begin with. Then everyone is watching the ball. I'm very surprised we didn't.

5. The defense played well and certainly good enough to win. But why is it the other team seems to march down the first time they get the ball. This is rare for a good defense. We seem to be playing from behind far too much.

6. Not a critique, but I think ARod is a very good coordinator. He has proven it with different QBs, RBs, WRs...etc. He won't always make the perfect play call (nobody does) but overall he does a really good job. This team on paper is devoid of top end talent, especially offensively. To do as well as they have done is a testament to him and the rest of the staff. I see so many on this board that were upset he didn't run the ball in the red zone in the first half and then upset he ran the ball in the 2nd half. You can't have it both ways.

7. QB decisions on who to throw the ball to and where are outside of the coordinators purview. An example is the fade. Roderick didn't know the other team would be manned up with the receiver and even then he 4 other other options for Retzlaff to choose from. Retzlaff made what I think is a poor decision (Ta'ase is big, but not a great receiver) but much worse he made a really poor throw physically.

8. I would love to see the team get in and out of huddles more quickly. I don't know if that is Retzlaff or A-rod. The Broncos struggled with this same problem with Russell Wilson a year ago and now suddenly have far less issues with it when the QB changed.

Anyone calling for the firing of coaches when we are 9-1 with the recruiting we have had doesn't understand the job that they are doing. It is a really good one. To me the 2 biggest thanks should be going to Jay Hill and Arod who are putting their guys in a position to succeed week in and week out. That isn't to snub Kalani, as he has built a good culture and hired these guys. But the X's and O's this year have been tremendous.
