Bummer. Losses like this put things into perspective for me.

Like, our entire undefeated season ended because a random pooch kick hit the helmet of a defender who thought it was a pass. What a funny, fluke play.

It just helps me remember that so many things we care about in life just aren't that big of a deal. Like, it's fun, and I have stronger relationships with several friends/family because we have football as a medium to bond and connect. My dad and I call 2-3 times a week just to talk BYU football and/or basketball. That's what's priceless. I wouldn't trade that bonding I get with my dad for anything. Him having cancer and fighting through it makes that bonding even more special for me.

I just feel reminded again tonight to not put my happiness on things outside of my control. Because flukes happen:

  • You could get laid off due to something totally out of your control (and probably will if you're in tech).
  • A boss can just decide to have it out for you for no reason.
  • A car can break down, food can spoil, things can happen.

And a football can hit your defender's helmet and give the opposing team an easy TD.

Bummer. But that's not where your happiness should come from.

I'm grateful to be a fan of a team who believes in something bigger, something more. Collectively, we understand, due to the perspective the Gospel gives us, that life isn't about football, your career, or how big your house is.

What matters is who you become while you're here in mortality and who you connect with. Family, relationships (including with God), repentance, trying to become like Jesus. That's what matters.

If you make your happiness depend on football, random flukes will ruin it.

If your happiness depends on a job: a bad boss will ruin it.

If your happiness depends on Money: a natural disaster will ruin it.

Bettering yourself, getting closer to God, and serving those around you: that blesses you with internal happiness, an living water inside of you, so you never thirst. Even when bad times come, you can have perspective.

It's kind of nice when random bad flukes happen, like tonight, because it reminds you that life is funny, and only the really important things are actually important.

That being said: Go Cougs! Bounce back next week!

(sorry I get weirdly religious late at night lol).
