Pharmaceutical parents are different from software parents, and both are different from patents on consumer products. Different groups of companies securing patents over very different things. Even Apple's design patents over smartphone visual features are different from its networking patents. There are great arguments to reform our patent system and either limit the lifetime of patents in certain industries or else stop granting them altogether. But other industries really benefit by inventors being able to patent their stuff.
