The moment he recognizes the call was right, that they lost because BYU was the better team- that’s the moment he admits they’ve lost 2 in a row, will have gone 6 years without beating us, and BYU is back to a level playing field.
The longer he can convince others that the refs won the game for BYU, the longer the unbiased public perception is that Utah still has the upper hand and is the better school in Utah to play football. He wants to convince the state that this win was just a fluke.
To be honest, I think that’s why Harlan and him had the reaction they did. They see the blue wave coming for the state of Utah and they saw this game as a huge turning point for our state and the perception of both programs.
Now, their program is on life support. There’s a real chance they spend the next 1-2 decades in our shadow.
