Getting two teams into the playoff might seem, on the surface, to be the best case scenario for the Big 12 and its perception going forward. But that is not the best case scenario at all.
The best case scenario for the perception of the Big 12 compared with other P4 conferences is for BYU to go undefeated and win the national championship. That is the best case scenario. If BYU really wants to do what is best for the conference, then just keep winning.
With every win, this becomes a greater possibility. Just keep winning.
Remember, when Oklahoma and Texas left the national pundits were all dogging on the Big 12 as not having a worthy national program to headline the conference as Oklahoma and Texas did. I realize that those same media pundits would probably prefer Colorado to become that, but how long will Deion really be there? Will they continue to garner as much media attention without him? Not likely. How great would it be for the conference if the very first year that Texas and Oklahoma are gone — when so many doubted that there would be any top brands to headline the Big 12 — that the undefeated Big 12 conference champion won the national championship?
I am not a Ute. I am not claiming that BYU will run the conference. I am claiming that BYU remaining undefeated and winning the national championship is very best case scenario for the conference starting out on the right foot in this new P4/12-Team CFP environment.
For the good of the conference, just keep winning.
