For those who don't believe the Playoff Committee will favor the SEC & B1G...

Out of the 10 years of 4 team playoff history, only once was more than one non-SEC/B1G team included and it was a year where ND was included.

In the 10 year history of the 4 team playoff based off of current conference affiliation...

  • SEC
    • Averaged 1.8 teams per year
    • 2+ teams 7 out of 10 years
    • 3 teams in one year (obviously this includes a school that switched conferences)
  • B1G
    • Averaged 1.1 teams per year
    • 2 teams 3 out of 10 years
    • 2 years with no team
  • ACC
    • Averaged 0.7 teams per year
    • Never had more than 1 team
    • Clemson 6 times and Florida State once
  • XII
    • 2 times out of 10 years
    • Both times one was included the other 3 teams were from the SEC/B1G
  • ND
    • 2 times out of 10 years

When those of us who recognize that the new playoff is intended to include 4 teams from each the B1G & SEC this is not a recent change. We have over 10 years of history showing that these are the teams they want included.

I know that some of you will complain about how the conference affiliation at the time was different. Look at the rankings, the first 1-loss non-SEC/B1G team is ND at #8 (see note 1) then Miami at #9 (see note 2), then Boise St & SMU who are on the outside looking in (see note 3.) The first 2-loss non-SEC/B1G team is K-State at #16. Meanwhile there are 4 1-loss SEC/B1G schools in the top 7, and 3 2-loss SEC/B1G teams in the top 12, 4 before you get to K-State.

#17-25 consists of 9 teams.

  • SEC - 3
    • 2 of the 3 have 3 losses and the one that only has 2 is Missouri.
  • ACC - 2
    • 1 3-loss, 1 2-loss
  • XII - 1
    • 2-loss and moving up quickly since CU draws TV ratings.
  • PAC2 - 1
    • 1-loss
  • AAC - 2
    • 1 undefeated, 1 2-loss

It is what it is. The playoff is designed to generate money and to direct the majority of that money to the SEC and B1G. If ND loses again and drops out of the playoff, that opens the door for a non-conference champion not from the SEC/B1G to get in, but otherwise it's the 5 conference champs and 6 non-conference champions from the SEC/B1G.
