Because the committee has historically shown to not punish teams drastically for
losing in their conference championship games. If BYU climbs all the way to #3, only dropping 3 spots after losing in a conference title game isn't an unreasonable expectation.

I put BYU ahead of Indiana in that scenario because I think that their resume is better at that point (BYU would have beaten the ACC Champion, Indiana would not have beaten a single ranked opponent). I could see an argument of swapping them, though.

I don't think you can put SMU ahead of them because BYU beat SMU in Dallas. Colorado has 2 losses, which I think holds them behind a 1-loss SMU.

And I just don't see BYU dropping all the way outside of the top 10 when they have 12 wins and the #10 team has 2 fewer wins. I expect a 12-1 BYU team to finish below an 11-2 Big Ten or SEC team, but I would be surprised if they finished behind a 10-2 SEC team.
