Sugar was exclusively tied to the SEC, and would often play opponents from the Big 8, SWC or an independent. That historically was the Big XII minus the SWC left behinds. But, when the Big XII was formed, the Big XII champion was tied to the Fiesta Bowl up until the CFP and when it was the site of the BCS championship. So, that’s why the distinction to Sugar (SEC champion) and Fiesta (Big XII champion) exists traditionally.
