Subject: New Area of Emphasis – Utah Utes Defensive Backs and Holding Penalties
Dear Conference Officiating Crews and Football Personnel,
As we continue to monitor the performance and conduct of teams within the Big 12, we have identified a growing trend that requires immediate attention: the defensive backs of the Utah Utes and their repeated involvement in holding penalties. This has become a point of concern, and as such, we are instituting a new area of emphasis moving forward.
Focus on Holding Penalties
Effective immediately, all conference Officiating crews are advised to pay particular attention to the defensive backs of the Utah Utes during upcoming contests, specifically in regard to their technique and the frequency of holding infractions. We expect a more stringent application of holding penalties in order to maintain the integrity of the game and uphold fair competition.
Advisement for Emotional Management
We understand that these types of issues can be emotionally charged for coaches and staff. In the interest of promoting a constructive and focused environment, we kindly suggest that the Utah Utes coaching staff and Athletic Director utilize the blue medical tent as a designated space for emotional support, should the intensity of the game lead to heightened frustration. This "cry closet," while unconventional, can provide a space for coaches to regroup, refocus, and maintain composure during high-stress moments. An additional medical tent will be provided on the Utah Ute sideline for the remainder of the season to accommodate expected usage.
We trust that everyone will take these advisements seriously and work to ensure a fair and smooth continuation of the season. Our goal is to preserve the integrity of the game, while also offering support where necessary.
Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Conference office.
Thank you for your cooperation and dedication to the Big 12.
Sincerely,
Brett Yormark
Commissioner
